Fuel pressure is good and the injectors pass the 400ms/fuel pressure drop test. The computer shows no codes. Anybody have a sugestion as to what I should check next?
I have the same thing on my 97 with 60K miles. No codes, pulls strong all the way, but with light throttle between 2000-2500 Revs, it sounds like a couple of pennies in a tin can. It also sounds like it's coming from right under the the center of the dash, below the floor board.

Local dealer wants to keep it for a week and $500 - 1500 to tear it apart to find it and fix it (!) No way...

I read multiple threads about the H pipe, and wonder if replacing it with the X pipe will solve it.

I have a 2000 A4 coupe that sometimes pings on light slow acceleration, such as when going up a hill. It is worse when the AC is on. I have tried switching to Shell V-power gasoline and using octane booster as well as injector cleaners. None of this made any difference. There is some info on this forum about a service bulliten on the knock sensors (which are supposed to tell the computer when your car is knocking and then automatically retard the timing). Some forum members say this is the last thing you should try, since just using some top engine cleaner and/or replacing the spark plugs often clears up the problem. Good luck.

Top engine cleaner (Sea Foam, etc.) is helpful. Moreover, the number two knock sensor is known for having easily worn seals often due to water that has trapped in this area on top of the intake manifold. Check the TSB's. Good luck to you.

It's really not that difficult to figure out, rent a scanner or have someone scan it for you, check to see if the timing is dropping. That eliminates all the other possibilites. Then go to the next possible problem if it's not the timing, such as shifter rattle, exhaust rattle.Theres the right way to do things, then theres guessing-confussing-and throwing money at the problem until you finally fix it.

I have an 03 with 42k and I have the same can of pennies or marbles. Started very light a week ago, now getting louder, especially at start up.

not sure if this is it or not...if you already know this then just disregard it.

The C5 is known to have an extremely noisy throwout bearing. This might be your problem...I know mine is pretty loud especially if I turn the car off with my foot off the clutch pedal.
