Resetting oil life

Resetting oil life
I never had a problem with this before. The manual says
"With the ignition on, press the TRIP button so the
OIL LIFE percentage is displayed.
Press RESET and hold for two seconds. The word
RESET will appear, then OIL LIFE 99%"
but now the word "reset" does not appear, it just says "_ _ _ %" and will not reset. Each time I start up the car I still get the "change oil now" message.

I dont know if this will help but once after an oil change I reset the oil life with the engine running and got the _ _ _ %. I turned the engine off and turned the key to on but did not crank the engine and reset the oil and it went to 100%...
Always reset it with the engine off...

It's 3 times but after you are done you have to get out of the car and run around it screaming Corvette Rocks!!! 
seriously I have had it not say 100% and just have the blanks but usually when you turn it off and on it will be right

This was the method I used Saturday.
100% Life showed up immediately following the ignition cycle back to Off/On
