Default Oil Pressure.........help

Last night well driving home I stopped for a red light and notice my oil pressure gage reading 80psi. I pulled to the shoulder and checked my oil, it was a little more than a quart low. Fortunately I spotted an Auto Zone a block away, I put a quart in and drove home (approx. 15 miles)but the gage was still reading 80psi and the DIC oil reading 130 degrees. Today I went to the garage and found oil under the car. I started the car and I didn't hear any clacking (rods, pistons or crank)noise but the gage went right to 80psi, I shut the car off.

Anyone have any ideas what might be the problem. I'm just guessing but could the oil pump have gone out or the oil pickup be clogged. My vett is a 99 with 72,000 miles of very conservative driving and is generally driven daily. I've followed the maintance schedule changing oil every 3500 to 4500 miles. Hopefully there isn't any internal damage and I haven't been under the car for further inspection.

You have a bad oil pressure sensor. It happens a lot. Do a search on "oil pressure sensor" and you will find out all you need to know.

Mine went earlier this year and like you my heart sank to my knees but as I found out, this is very commonn on the C5's...not a big issue other than the fact that you (or your dealer) has to pull the intake manifold off to get at the OP switch

mine just started doing that the other day. I've noticed that it reads exactly double the psi I'm normally at. So at least I still know what psi I'm still at. BTW anyone know the part number for the sending unit? Thanks

Hi, the part number is 12573107.

I replaced the sensor a few months ago. In addition to the above instructions, remove some coolant. The level should be lower than the throttle body hoses. Also use the torque sequence on the picture below. No need to remove the fuel lines. You need a deep 1 1/8 socket. That was easier than I thought.


Here is the link to the instruction I used. Be sure to reconnect the small hose circle in red on step 13 b.

I just did mine today... I'd like to make a correction to the above (very well write up) and that the size of the sensor is 1 1/16'' and not 1 1/8''. You’re going to need a DEEP socket!

Also don't forget the water line in the front of the manifold; it will prevent the manifold from being able to be moved the six inches forward…

thanks for all the replies, but did anyone notice a puddle of oil underneath there car and if so where did it come from. Did the pressure force it to come from the filter or maybe the drian plug or oil pan. I'm scared to death i have a major problem.

next to the oil filter is the oil temp sensor, I also replaced that yesterday on mine, it could be coming from there but, I don't think you'd get puddles of oil...

Let us know what you find out.

Default Bad Oil Pressure Sensor

HIP HIP HOORAY....
Got my baby back yesterday and everything is fine (what a relief). As you can see below my baby had issuses. My tech replaced the sensor yesterday (11-16-05) and everything back to normal. What I thought was oil underneath my car was actually antifreeze. My tech was even nice enough to clean the undercarriage of my car. I was charge $60 for the sensor and $210 for the labor whic I was more than happy to pay. I read all the post and printed out the detailed instructions someone posted and just decided to have my tech due it. This was not a GM shop but a high performance shop specializing in trans work. If your in the Chicago area and need any automotive work done I highly recommend PRO/CAR Transmissions in Evergreen Park, 91st and Kedzie.
