Previous discussion on the forum indicates it depends what year. Apparently early C-5s could be damaged by the synthetic and the change year was about 2001. I have a '99 and went back with Dexron III. The problem was something about paper synchros or blocking rings in the earlier models.

Hmm...I am planning to change the oil in my 98 soon as well, so hopefully someone can give a definitive answer about what oil is safe to use in these earlier transmissions...I was planning to use Amsoil ATF, but I will wait and see...
From what I've read, the problem with the paper blocker rings in the early trannys resulted from using an ester based synthetic, such as Redline. Mobil 1 and AMSOIL use a PAO based synthetic.
The AMSOIL ATF does meet GM Dexron III standards and is what I use in my 02 Z06 (tranny still original stock unit) on the track.
