Just undo the valve stem and put them on the new wheels, there is not much to it. you can program them your self, You just need a big speaker magnet or something similar. If you have the tire off the wheel you will see how to take it off and put them back on
Some after market wheels will not accept the sensors in the normal position, if this is the case you can band them to the wheels. also a good idea to get new o-rings when putting the sensor on a different wheel.
Are you changing wheels or are the sensor just on the wrong corners?
If the later, just reprogram the sensors - sensors work on any corner. Happens more often than you'd think when tires get changed.
If a wheel change - like he said, just unscrew them.
The valve stem is part of the sensor. The valve stem has a collar that secures the stem in the wheel. The sensor is a small palstic module on the other end of the valve stem. It resides inside the tire and senses the pressure in the tire. Like it was stated above, if the sensors dont function, or read on the wrong wheel, all they need is to be reprogrammed to the correct wheel. This can be done with the tires/rims on the car. The procedure is in C5 Tech Tips, or can be found in your owners manual. All you need is a strong magnet. Once you enter the TPS training page in the DIC,, follow the directions and program each sensor using the magnet.
If the sensors are bad, pop the bead, unscrew collar, remove the sensor, install a new one ect!

Oh, by the way,,, the 1997-2000 sensors will NOT work on a 2001-2004 TPM system and a 2001-2004 sensor will not work on a 1997-2000 system. Dont even think about it!!!
1) The small sensor hole you mention, will a flat fixer you spray in the tire on the road plug this hole? Is that why sealers shouldn't be used?
2) Should the sensor be unfastened and "dropped" into the tire so the tire changer doesn't eat it?
Thanks for all the super input you provide here Bill!!!

YES, the fix a flat will plug that sense hole and render the senser useless. I would think that you could remove the sensor and clean it out and return it to normal operation.
As for "Should the sensor be unfastened and "dropped" into the tire so the tire changer doesn't eat it?" NO!!!!!!! Do not remove or drop it in the tire! Just tell the BOZO tire monkey that the sensor is where the valve stem is and to keep the bead breaker away from that area! Also tell them NOT to try to remove and replace the valve stems !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a guy quote me valve stem replacement on a tire change estimate!!!!!
If you have "RUN FLATS" the tire shop should be using a special touchless bead bar to prevent tire and rim damage.
