What i thought would just be a gasket leak on the pan i am told is the seal on the output shaft where the differential and transmission meet.
Cost aprox 800 bux 8.7 hours What exactly will be done on this job? Should i change out my gears if i was to have this done? 2000 a4
How often has this occured for anyone else? What i was seeing was tranny fluid residue being blown back on the differential. No puddles or anything of that nature.
"technically" on the A4 there is no seal between the transmission and diff. Each piece is independently sealed within themselves... and the two are bolted to each other. Since your seeing tranny fluid (factory color would be dark red) - then there is a chance the rear main seal on the transmission output shaft is bad.
In order to replace this seal, the carrier (diff) will need be removed. An opportune time to change rear gearing
Is it gear lube leaking or ATF fluid (RED)? The rear seal can be done for around $50.00 parts and 4 to 5 hours of time. Not very hard - esp. if you done a front wheel drive car before. Search the forum for the step by step how to on this. But if it’s the tranny itself then the gasket would not be hard at all (one hour job?) and anyone could do it. Double check what is leaking. It may be the seal between the Tranny and Rear end.
It really up to you if you want to swap gears. If you have the extra cash AND have 2.73 then I would do it right away. If you don’t and have 3.15 - then ????? The most i would think it would cost to replace the rear axle seal only is $250 - 300 labor plus parts.
