Default Clutch Advice

Hi, y'all. I'm looking for some advice on replacing my stock clutch.

The car has 75,000 miles on it and makes a little over 400hp at the rear wheels. I have a 150 shot of nitrous on top of that, but I haven't sprayed once in over a year, so that's not really a big deal.

I don't get to the track any more, so we're looking at daily street driving.

I was trying to decide between the stock ZO6 unit and something like a Stage 2 SPEC clutch.

Any advice out there from those with experience? To what extent will I want to go, i.e. flywheel, throw-out bearing, bolts, etc?

Thanks in advance.

Take a serious look at the LS7 clutch. I'm 430/400 H/C and it's been great. Feels like a stock clutch but NO slippage. You have to use the LS7 flywheel. About $520 from Fred Beans. Don't forget to replace you slave at the same time with the LS6 slave cylinder.

Thanks, WKMCD. That's one vote for the new ZO6 clutch (of course, I wish I had a new ZO6 to go with it). Anyone else?

I went with the LS-7 clutch, but don't forget to install a bleeder hose, got mine from LAPD.

Mike,
I went with the Aussie and it has been awesome! Takes a beating at the track and is as smooth as the OEM Z06 and just gets better every day.

Be careful over there in durka durka stan!!! That place you are in is still crappy and be safe. Are you from Bragg too???

Another vote for the LS7 clutch. Installed it a few weeks ago, it's smooth as glass and grips like a mother.

Use the LS2 flywheel, LS7 disc & PP, an '04 Z06 slave (all from Fred Beans), and install a remote bleeder from LAPD.

Thanks for all of the replies. I've been warned that going to an aluminum flywheel might be less than desirable for street use. Any thoughts?

Dave,

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm not from Bragg...I'm with the Marines, but as far as I'm concerned, we're all in the same gang. Though, as much as I love the desert , I can't wait to get home and drive a sports car again! I'm not familiar with the Aussie unit - can you give me a little more info. on it?

Thanks.

Vote for Cartek clutch here. Making 535rwhp and hasn't slipped once. Lots of great clutches out there these days. Cartek feels just like stock clutch.

Hey Mike,
Same team for sure brother! I just feal bad of the less then desireable postitons you guys get put in. I was very close to providing coms there 10 months ago, but it went down too fast, whew! We where @ Victory, day 3 and set up the hub for all the coms over there last time too. Busy time to be in our profession, brother, but it is great to come home safe, and save $ and feel wealthy, and buy vettes! Not to get goofy or place my personal beliefs where they do not belong, but we pray for everyone, still over there to be safe, and come home soon, and please PM me some time with your contact information and I will get it to my parents church group, and we will get you what ever you need. They are very experianced with me allways being gone, and know what we need to survive and thrive (lots of coffee!!! Vette magazeene, corvette feaver, enthusiats, GM high pro...)...

Sorry to digress, but I am giddy to be home and driving again

my aussie clutch review

I did a semi review of it too, see above, and I need to update it as the more I drive it, the better it gets. I think most of it was due to my limited driving over the last 9 months. All in all it feals great, a bit firmer, than OEM Z (10% maybe?) and it just engages awesome, quick, solid and it takes it! I was hot lappping my first track day back with great prep, very sticky, and it just held no matter how bad I beat on it. It pulled a 1.5 60 on ET St radilas (17s) with my OEM 342 out back, and it was not the driver (I suck!).

Be safe brother and come home soon!

Dave-

Thanks, again, man. I sent you a PM.

All-

Thanks for the help. In checking on Fred Beans parts site, the LS7 clutch and flywheel, the LS6 slave and master, and the pilot bearing are listed. Should all of these be done together on a car that has high mileage like mine? Is there anything else that I'm missing that should be purchased prior to install? How long for a trained ASE certified Vette guy to do the install (and what price is reasonable)?

Thanks, again.

To reiterate-

If I were to go with all GM, for example, then the LS7 clutch and flywheel with the LS6 slave and master, plus the pilot bearing seem to be recommended.

If I were to go with a clutch like the Aussie, would I still replace the slave and master with the LS6?

What are the advantages/reasons for installing the remote bleeder?

Thanks.

The LAPD remote bleeder is a must. The factory setup is just a plug on the top of the slave cyl. It is very hard to bleed the slave cyl. with the factory setup. Why do I need to bleed the slave, you ask? Because the clutch makes heat, and the line to the master cyl. runs by the exhaust manifold, picking up more heat. As the fluid heats up, it expands. When it expands it moves air out of the master cyl. When it eventually cools down it pulls air back into the master cyl. With this air also comes moisture. The clutch fluid is hygroscopic, that is it draws in moisture, which will contaminate the system, and affect clutch performance. How often should I bleed the system, you ask? Depends on how hard you drive your car. When you see the fluid in the master cyl. starting to look discolored, it is time to bleed the system. How do I bleed the system with my new LAPD remote bleeder, you ask. I ues a MityVac hand vaccum pump on the remote bleeder and pull all the contaminated fluid out. Let me know if you need more specific details on bleeding the system.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Desert to all the Corvette Community! I hope that you are your families are safe and together.

DRR-

Thanks for the info. How useful would this be if I don't track the car anymore? Was the installation difficult to perform at the time of clutch replacement?

Thanks.
