Is this all the time, or just at low speeds (like in the driveway)? If the latter, its probably thr Rusty Spline Syndrome. Take off the spline nut and grease the splines. I used white lithium grease in a spray can. Others use other types of grease or WD40. Use the search. There are plenty of threads on this issue.

Get your hands on a 34mm axle nut socket and check the torque on the rear axle spline nuts. They should be 108 ft/lbs. I had the same problem, took it to a dealership and they found it.

Default Clunk

The solution is to loosen the rear hub nut (33mm) with a CV tool from Pepboys or autozone, etc. Then spray white litium grease (like WD40 but better) on the splines using the plastic straw. Do not remove it, just screw it off about 1 inch. Retorque and no more clunk.
There is a post on the forum, just search for "rear clunking noise".

Agree with you 99% except the hub nut is a 34mm as others have stated above. At least my Z06's is a 34mm.

Not to steal the thread... but I've a similar, BIGGER problem. I've an A4 tranny also, with 2.73 rear end. Here's what happens. Put it in "D", makes clunk noise in the back. I drive straight, kind of ok. But when I make a turn, even at slow speeds, I hear something grinding badly in the back. Its like metal to metal grinding, clunking noise. Very loud and obvious. Could it be my differential going out, a bad tranny, or spline (whatever that is, I'm not sure) Plz help..

Default Thunk is gone

Did the white lithium on the axle splines this evening. Amazing how it just dissappeared. I can't believe how long I have just put up with it. Took about an hour to do both sides. 34mm axle socket worked but I think it probably is a 33mm, but this size is harder to find. Thanks all for your imput. This forum is great!

Default 34mm or 33mm

I bought the 34mm but it was loose. I took it back and got the 33mm and it fits perfect. This also fixed my car, and two friends cars. I wonder how much money Chev Dealers have made off of this problem?

Ditto, same experience. Either some folks are using a loose fitting 34mm or there are two different size axel nuts. The 33mm on my 2000 vert is a perfect fit while the 34mm is loose. There should be NO play with the socket on the nut. Try rotating it left and right. You should feel no movement.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but could anyone be a little more specific on the procedure for greasing splines? Someone in a previous post said back the nut up 1" then do you just spray the correct lube at the end of the splines without removing anything and let it work in by itself or do you have to actually have to remove a hub to get to the whole spline? Thanks for any help.
