I have a roaring noise coming from the back of my C5. It started right around 52K miles. I have Corsa Indys but they have always been relatively quiet until you accelerate or rev hard. I thought they might have gotten loose so I had an exhaust shop check them - nope, they're nice and tight. Then I thought it might be the rear tires since they are fairly worn - bought new Michelin Sports for the rear, made no difference.
So...anyone have this problem or a good guess? Time to change the rear end oil? Wheel bearings maybe?
put the car in neutral, this will eliminate any exhaust culprits, does it bet worse when making a slight turn? most likely wheel bearing, autozone about $150
When my bearing started going out, it would make a slight moaning noise at about 60mph, a loud exhaust would mask it. After a few months it turned into a wind noise that turned into a loud whine at highway speeds. I definately knew what it was when it started rattling around. Try and see which side it's coming from. I actually raised the rear up and took it up to 45mph to eliminate tire noise which you might want to try.
It's a good idea to change your rear end fluid often but I doubt that will fix your problem. You should probably go head and order the rear bearing. If you want, you can wait till it starts to rattle to be certain. I was scared to drive it after that happened, almost had it towed the 3 miles back home but didn't.
If you need the procedure, email me at Ttop34@hotmail.com and I'll forward you what Patches sent me.
a really easy way to tell which side it i, is by jerking the car in one direction and by taking the load off of that bearing it should stop making that noise for a split second. I just had this happen to me. Its harder to do this on a turn because the load doesnt come off entirely. Do a sudden jerk and you should be able to narrow it to what side. Hope this works out for you Mine is really bad now, it vibrates the whole car after 30mph, it doesnt matter what rpm im in.
