Well, about 3 months ago I had my gear in my right headlight motor break. I ordered the brass gear from Rodney Dickman. I installed it following the directions to a T. In other words, I used a dremel tool with sanding disc to remove 100% of the old glue, and used alcohol for prep. Used supplied epoxy, let it set-up.....etc.
Yesterday I noticed my right headlight squeaking when I raised and lowered it. Today after further inspection I noticed the lid that covers the freaking gears had popped off and it was just laying there. The gear has shifted outward some, so it won't just push back on. I have to take the whole damn assembly back out again and do it all over.
Does anybody have an idea as to why this would have happened? Also, what kind of glue should I buy so this cover will not come off again? I DO NOT want to do this again! It took 3 hours the first time, and I don't have that kind of time to keep wasting on these pop-up lights. No wonder GM went to a fixed assembly on the C6. They just can't seem to get the pop-ups right.
Happened to me too. Luckily the later year headlight gear motors are not glue on, but use screws to prevent this in the future. Be glad though, it took me three times to get the cover not to come off and even then it may have again, but I sold the 98 for an 04. What I did in the long run was use plastic epoxy and then I wrapped it but good with black duct tape. Kind of like a cast. I thought about taking the tape off when it was dry, but I left it on since it was black and it was not noticable once installed. The forces the motor is suspectable too, make the cover so likely to pop off again, so the tape served as a buffer. Probably wasnt neccessary, but like I said, three times it popped off with supplied tape, superglue and epoxy before so i just left the tape on this time. Not the best looking idea, but it was making me mad.
