I have a 97 A4. I have heard varying opinions on Royal Purple synthetic ATF or any synthetic ATF being used on pre 2001 cars. Is there anything to this? Why can't I use synthetic ATF if it is an approved Dex III fluid?
I've read, but can't personally confirm, that the issue with synthetics in early transmissions related to the paper blocking rings in the manual transmissions when using an ester based synthetic such as Redline. I have not heard of any issues in the early manual transmissions when using a PAO based synthetic such as Mobil 1 ATF or AMSOIL ATF. I'm not sure what basestock Royal Purple uses, but I suspect it isn't ester.
And I don't recall that this issue applies to the A4.
It should be mandatory reading for every C5 CF member....
It details the issue that subdriver was referring to... enjoy the read
That's a great link! Going to bookmark that one.
The info on that link is pretty much what I stated with the difference that according to the info on that link, you should stay away from Mobil 1 ATF which I find a little surprising, but he does give a good list of the ATFs that seem to work with the paper blocking rings. And I couldn't find any info on that thread to indicate that this issue applied to the A4.
