To check the fluid level of either the tranmission or differential, you have to jack up the car level and support it properly, of course. Find the FILL plug and remove it, stick a skinny finger into the hole. When full, your finger should touch fluid at a level even or slightly below the hole. If it is overfilled, it will run out the fill hole.

Not qualified to tell you where the common leaks are.

I found a few drops from the tranny on the floor the other day and spent last night changing the tranny filter and gasket. That seems to have fixed it as there aren't any drips today and I could see where it was leaking and the gasket there was dried and cracking. $25 for the filter and gasket from Napa and a couple hours should have you back rolln.

If it's an A4, the engine must be running when checking the fluid level, else it will always run out. Instructions here (scroll to Transmissions and Rear Axle, paragraph 2).
