I’m sure I’m not the first one to wonder if a VaraRam air intake system (or similar) is worth the money. Do you really get more horsepower? Can you say it makes a difference? And I don’t mean in racing.
I did the Blackwing on mine and added the cold air mod sold by TeamZR1 called the "ice box". I was impressed with the increased filter area of the Blackwing as well as the overall quality of it. When you add a good cold air system, I think it's a win/win combo. You do have to keep away from deep water, or the air dam might scoop water into your intake but hydo locking is a potential problem with any cold air intake. You just have to use your head when driving in the rain. Deep water and 4 inch puddles.... stay away!! Or, you can plan your install to be able to block off the cold air with a piece of plexiglass for foul weather.
SOTP is very noticable at all speeds and most noticable on the top end due mostly (IMHO) to having a larger filter area. Cold air adds about 3% HP increase per 10 degree drop in intake temperature. (Very ball park figure, lots of variables there!)
I looked at the vararam and wanted a better filtering medium with more surface area. That was the deal-breaker for me.
Both systems will give you substantial gains over the stock air box. The Vararam takes the cake for HP increase due to the cold air intake. But, if you do a good cold air kit for the Blackwing, now you have cold air AND more filter area.
Read some posts and, if you can, look at both units in person before you shell out the bucks.
Yes it is worth it. Anything is better than the stock system that came with the car, and yes you will notice the diffeence withthe cold air where you live. And a Merry christmas to you and yours also.

You will not regret spending the $. You will love the extra power you get at higher speeds. You can feel the difference.

It was the first mod I did to the car and really noticed SOTP difference especially on the highway at higher speeds...the car just pulls harder/faster from 100 kmh to 180...and thats precisely the point in the powerband where I want the added performance. The other nice thing about the Vararam is that if by chance you don't like, you can post it for sale and they will line up to buy it from you. Good luck!!
On another note...lets see here...you're a doctor...who drives a red C5 ragtop...and lives in SWEDEN of all places!! How do keep them away!!!

Thank you for your advise. I'm always too late. I'm an obstetrician so they are all pregnant!
But I love my car (my 6th Vette). Sold my -97 Vette last summer and bought a jaguar XK8. It was not right for me. I'm not that old. No testosterone in a Jag. Sold it and bought a "just like new" Vette in Germany, -99 convertible. Have a nice holiday!
