LS6 Swap, worth it?
If the former, the ability to continue to drive the car while working on a project engine at a unhurried pace would be something to consider. It's soooo easy to spend someone elses money!

He doesn't drive the car often, he has a full time mechanic he PAYS to service his company equipment and vehicles anyway, and he can significantly cut his costs by assisting his mechanic in the install.
Have fun!
Call me Roy when you're ready to pull it.

Swapping your LS1 for a LS6 engine is a quick way to gain a few more hp right out of the box/crate. It's an easy and fast swap and your LS1 PCM will start and run the LS6 engine just fine (no tuning required) unless you want to maximize hp that the LS6 will give you.
Things to know: GM has discontinued Part#: 12578104 ~ 2004 Corvette, LS6, 405hp, Z06 Crate Engine. GM is has replaced it with: Part#:17801268 ~ 2005 LS6 406 hp Cadillac Crate Engine.
It's basically the same engine, but comes with an oil pan, flywheel/clutch kit, and pilot bearing setup for a Cadillac.
Price: $7,295.00 for the Crate Engine.
How do I know this. . . . I ordered the 12578104 Crate Engine for my 1999 C5 and received the 17801268 Crate Engine. This caused some problems, because I wasn't expecting GM to replace engines part numbers and setup. So, when I received my Crate Engine it caused a little confusion and slowed down my install. Order the 2004 Z06 Flywheel/Clutch kit $350.00 and that will take care of the clutch problem. Order the C5 Pilot Bearing (about $25.00) and that will solve the torque tube bell housing and input shaft problem you're gonna have if you don't. Then everything will bolt up and you should be good to go.
You don't have to change the wiring harness or PCM/ECM with the LS6 engine. If you go the LS2 route then that's you're looking at a new PCM, wiring harness, and a few other issues.
The LS7 engine is a whole different ball game.. . . you'll need the dry sump setup for the LS7 engine, new PCM, new wiring harness, and room in your engine compartment to put it all. Stick with the LS6 if you decide to do the swap out !
Hope this helps a little.
