many people use trickle chargers for winter or long term storage, as do I. just make sure you use the kind that shut off after the battery is fully charged. I don't unhook my battery from the car , I just hook up the trickle charger and leave it til spring. It's worked every year since 2000, with out a single problem.
I have one from Sears..paid like $29 for it...works great...charges and then switches to maintenance mode....it comes with an option to hook the connector up to the car permanent or it has the clips for the battery post...both ends have a quick connect plug.
There was a thread last week going and many have this. I just got two yesterday. My Sears chargers have been dying. I buy tons of stuff from Sears but they haven't worked well. All Chinese crap anyway but I hope the new ones work better. Sears has taken the back but it's still PITA plus the new ones have a nice plug you leave on the car.
You do NOT want a trickle charger... they can overcharge a battery.
The 21st century version is called a battery float charger. They have a microchip that measures the instantaneous amp drain on your battery and matches than so that you battery is maintained at 100%.
there are plenty of brands and you can spend almost what ever you want...
I use the one from Harbor Freight.... It can be had on sale for as little as $7.
Best $$$ I have ever spent.
