When coming to a stop, such as a stop sign, after downshifting into first there is a shuddering. It smooths out after I complete the stop. This is only on deceleration and sometimes have it in the summer when the air is on, backing out of a parking space with the wheels turned. Both are low RPM conditions. I know in the summer all that stuff puts a load on the motor, but why does it happen when I'm coming to a stop? Is there some idle adjustment out of whack or maybe something new plugs & wires would help?
an automatic should not be down shifted to slow the car down, that is what brakes are for. Especially first, never downshift into first while the car is moving.
With that said if you leave the car in 'Drive' does the shutter still happen??
What I really think it is are the brake rotor{s} are cracked. take a look at each of your rotors mostly the fronts. any cracks you could put a finger nail into??
Other things brake caliper bolts my be loose, or you need new brake pads. Do the first two things above.
No, I meant when the automatic downshifts. It's like it's waiting too long to downshift from second to first, especially when it's a semi-hard stop. It actually feels like it's lurching a little bit before first gear happens, al the while is doing the shudder dance. Maybe a downshift shift point being off?
I'm also thinking it may be a hydraulic thing so I may just go ahead and have the fluid and filter changed. A mechanic friend of mine said there were issues with the original filter shedding pieces of fiber that get stuck up in the valve bodies on these things. He has an '04 and had the same problem until he changed out the filter and fluid.
Is it a problem with the lock up Torque Convertor? If the Torque Convertor doesn't unlock properly you may getting a surging situation like the driver of a manual transmission would get if he put his foot on the brake and slowed the car too much before putting in the clutch.
