First off you can do a basically free mod. The zip tie mod. On my 2002 it was worth 15RWHP and 11 lb/ft of Tq.

Stock Box assembly

Other than a slightly bigger opening, the box portion is the same. So, you don't need to buy a new Z06 intake. Any C5 intake will work just fine.

I used the factory clamps. I simply removed the factory metal straps and replaced them with shorter one made from wire ties. This allows for consistent pressure to the filter frame.

Here Mc Rat's car. They just wrapped the ties around the box. I re-used the factory hardware to allow you to change the filter.

Hope this helps...

Don't do it, $50,000 car with a 10 cent mod stopping dirt and water

But it is your car, and is it worth the 2 HP

It works well on my Z06. A year later and no problems at all, and the horsepower gain was noticable. See J-Rod's post (above) for measured gains. There are no other mods that I'm aware of that cost pennies for 10 horses. Do you have to be a bit more careful because the air filter is uncovered? Yep, but just a modicum of thinking will keep your air filter going.

Sorry, but zip-tying the fliter (if done properly) can / will provide more clamping force from the filter to the air box than the stock clamps. And it's worth more than 2 HP, for sure.

I did this very same mod "hid the tabs on the back though" back in 98 at the dragsrip. Could only get 13.3 comepletly stock and at the track the same day I did this mod and ran 13.2 one after another. Tried no filter also but stayed the same. Has to be the cheepest mod around but worth it. "Note" I put twin K&N filters on later and still ran 13.2 but it does look better.

IMO: best to cut the front center area of the cover to open it a bit... that way you dont need to use zipties

I did the zip tie mod W/ K&N and yes it was worth it, but if I did it again I would just cut a big a$$ hole in the middle of the oem cover. I would feel better about it sealing but I've put on 30K mi+ on it with the zip ties and the mass air flow meter is still clean so it must be sealing. I spent the $300 I saved from buying a intake on a cam instead

It was worth a bit more than 2 HP. On my car it was worth 15HP and 11lb ft of Tq.

HP

TQ

When done properly as stated it will clamp as good or better than the stock metal clamps.

People look down on the Zip tie mod as it is cheap. Then they spend $600 on an intake that seals poorly, and has abismal filtration, and then get on the forum and sing its praises.

Look, no one is hold a gun to anyones head. If you want to use an aftermarket intake, please do. Thats what great. Its your car, and you can do whatever you want to it. Thats one of the things that is great about this country. Well have choices.

Anyway, IMHO and again, its only my opnion. I think the zip tie mod is the best bang for the buck. You may or may not agree, YMMV.

You may want to chop the front out of the stock lid. You may want to do the zip tie mod. On the other hand you may want to buyan aftermarket intake. The choice is entirely up to you.

Whatever choice anyone makes, just be happy with it, and go enjoy your car...

Merry Christmas everyone...

and I suppose taking it to the dealer for repairs and oil changes is the best as well.

J-Rod, thanks for posting the dyno results! The whole world doesn't revolve around chassis dynos but I'll tell you that it beats the SOTP dyno anyday! I'm looking for intake options on my 1997 C5 since I have the borla stinger on there already...I dunno if I'll get the gains that you saw with your Z06 but spending $60 on a K&N rather than $225-$400 for some "performance intake" sounds like a plan to me.

One question, is the Z06 air bridge the same as the stock C5? Assuming that's the same, it looks like the filter and airbox lid are the largest restrictions in the whole setup.

I am a bit concerned about inhaling water. I used a 3/4" drill bit and neatly added a total of six holes through the cover then used the stock straps etc.

That's one of the things to consider. The filter element is paper, whereas on a filter like the Donaldson, it is synthetic and oiled.

One is meant to be exposed, the other not.
