Default Cam Question?????

I have an 04 vert Auto trans. I put a 342 rear end in it and kooks headers and X pipe and a Vararam intake. How much help would a cam make. I run street only no drag strips for me. Which cam would be best. Thanks for any help.

"just a cam" is the problem. If you're going in there to put in a cam then- What about heads? What about a ported oil pump ? what about a dual link timming chain ? What about new rods ? What about new springs ? What about new rockers? What about a new TC? What about new gears? what about a trani cooler? etc, etc, etc.

Do you see what evil your simple question brings to mind ????

I would recommend you do a lot of research on this subject - there a many post on cams and heads. be SURE to check out the guy's at LS1 tech also - the guys over there are very knowledgeable and their search function works just like ours.

I'm not saying you can't cam a car without heads, it's just that this is the conclusion many come to after doing alot of research.

Even if you do decide do "just do a cam" the one you pick will be determined by what, if anything, you will be driven to do down the line.

Best advice anyone can give at this stage is : buy your wife/girl friend/ significant other a $5000 ring, get lucky, be loved and forget engine mods. In the long run you'll be saving at least $7000.

Good luck and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I was in the same position as you last year, in the end I got a cam from VHP because they have several cams that focus on developing power in the mid-range which is where I wanted it. I also did several other significant upgrades while it was apart such as the Katech timing chain, the GMPP timing chain damper and an ATI balancer with a pinned crankshaft.
