Think the clutch(or the whole thing) on the A/C is dead, car started stalling in the morning when it was cold and just seemed sluggish. Turns out, it was only when the defroster was on and the A/C was engaged that it was causing drag on the serpentine. It then decided to start screaming like a banshee SOOO, I think it is time to replace it. Is this a pain??? Should I go ahead and use this as an excuse to pull the whole front and top of the motor off and put in some new goodies?(ehem... Heads, cam, etc...) Any vendors want to through in a free A/C with purchase of Heads and Cam???
There are three alternate approaches.
Removing the right header as per jjcslynn
Removing the rad
Removing the water pump
any of the 3 give you enough space to get it out.
I just did mine, but the whole front of the engine is removed. I would have to say that removing the water pump would probably provide the best access. It is tight though. Don't forget to add as much compressor oil as you now have in the compressor. I believe there is nine ounces total in the system. I had to replace only 3 ounces. I bought it at NAPA. Good luck.
It's probably the a/c clutch, that can be changed in the car w/out removing the compressor, i rem'd the waterpump to gain better access to the compressor
