What's the scoop with Royal Purple oil? Is it as good as they say or shouod I stay with M1. All I want is to know my motor is well protected and lubricated!

Stick with the Mobil 1 and save $$$$. Unless you are racing the car every day and have thousands of dollars into a very hopped up motor, its a waste. It might make you feel better inside but you are just fooling yourself.

Royal purple is very good oil. Probably one of the best oils that you can get. On the other hand, Mobil 1 synthetic is also a very good synthetic oil. I dont believe the benifits of running royal purple "ENGINE OIL" over mobil 1 "ENGINE OIL" on an everyday LSX engine will be seen or are worth the extra money.

On the other hand,,,,running Royal purple in the differential and transmission is another story! That is where you should use royal purple!

RP are best known for their industrial oils.... gear oils.
I'd stick with Mobil 1

I run RP in the Trans and Diff and M1 in the engine. M1, RP, Redling and AMSOIL are all top quality products. I doubt you will notice any difference between them. The only reason I run the RP is that it is the only Synthetic ATF and gear oil I could find locally.

Though this isn't an automotive engine oil comparison, it may still interest you. AMSOIL has started including Royal Purple in their comparative oil testing. They just released this comprehensive report on motorcycle oils last month that includes both Royal Purple and Mobil's motorcycles oils. You can draw your own conclusions as to how this relates to the performance of their automotive engine oils.

You're welcome for the info, but not really sure how you see RP better than M1 in this comparison.
- RP sheared low out of grade in both 40 and 50 weights, M1 stayed in grade in both.
- RP was ranked 9 of 11 (40 weight) and 7 of 15 (50 weight) in High Temp High Shear, compared to M1s 5 of 11 and 2 of 15 respectively.
- RP was ranked 11 of 11 (40 weight) and 15 of 15 (50 weight) in the 4-ball wear test, compared to M1s 1 of 11 (tie) and 7 of 15 (tie) respectively.
- The RP did pass the 40 weight gear wear test whereas the M1 failed stage 13 of 13 with 320mm of wear, but both passed the 50 weight gear wear test.
- RP was ranked 10 of 11 (40 weight) and 15 of 15 (50 weight) in the volatility test, compared to M1s 1 of 11 and 4 of 15 respectively.
- RP failed both the 40 and 50 weight rust tests, whereas M1 passed both

Overall, the test ranked M1 3rd and RP 7th.

Royal Purple's 5w30, 10w30 and 10w40 all tend to shear down quite quickly, but their Racing 41 is an excellent choice for the LS1. It doesn't thin down as easily and oil analysis results have proven it's completely safe for normal street use, even up to 7 or 8k.

M1 seems to do pretty well when stacked up against all the others. Pretty impressive.
