Wheel Sensors!!??
Anyone out there know if I can install Wheel Sensors onto SSR GT3 wheels? I just took a look at the stem and it seems to be different then the standard wheel.
If you cant install them in the valve area, most people with the same problem install them with a wheel band. Most tire shops have these stocked, or can order them. I am sure you can get them online from one of the vendors also.
I didnt bother installing them on my new wheels. It just brings up a msg on the dtc. I have heard the dealer can get rid of this message for good. No clue how much they charge though.
I have a set of HRE wheels that have the wheel bands because the sensor will not fit the wheel. It's like a great big hose clamp that holds the sensor in a fixed place to the inside of the wheel. The valve stem itself is actually cut off leaving just the sensor body.
The TPS system is very very important, especially for those with non-runflats... Not having a spare can be a big problem... having sensors can alert you of a slow leak allowing you to add air via a portable compressor... you could go for hundreds of miles with a slow leak and not hurt the tire. Anyone without a spare would be a fool not to take advantage of the TPS system. You can buy new sensors from Fred beans a supporting sponsor. 97 to 00 are 85 dollars each , and the 01 to 04 are 39 dollars. Rarely do you get a "BLOW OUT"... but a SLOW LEAK IS OFTEN THE CASE,.,, being able to see a low tire pressure warning at 25 psi, would allow you to refill the tire and have it monitor the progress of the leak.
Master and Carr has the bands for four wheel for around 60 dollars...

the wheel bnad they talk about is basically a huge hose clamp thats about 60 inches long and it holds the old sensor next to where its supposed to go. im sure a blob of silicone glue would work just as good.
I have a picture of the BAND CLAMP that I can post later tonight (at work and cant post pics) Evil twin is %100 correct. I had TPS installed in my 02 Z06 and it saved my rim and possible my life! Tire blew out and the C5 wont let you know that there is a tire issue until the tire is off the rim and your skimming along on aluminum!
The system works very well! I didnt know how much I missed having tire pressure sensors until I sold my 98 and purchased the Z06!
The TPS functionality resides in the BCM. The Remote Function Actuator receives the radio frequency from the FOB and TPS. It decodes the RF and sends the digital signal to the BCM.
If you have the dealer deactivate or activate the TPS function, they normaly charge you right at 1 hour labor to program the BCM with the TECH II. I installed the sensors in my own rims. They tried to charge me an enviormental waste disposal fee! I yelled about that one and they removed the charges!!
