Default O2 Sensor Color

I pulled one of my front sensors off, and was surprised to see it black and sooty - heavily carboned up.

Other sensors I have seen are usually a tan color.

I have no codes, and it runs fine except for the darn exhaust jingle.

Is this black appearance normal?

Thanks in advance

That's what I thought - would it be because I am getting some misfires on the coil packs? Not enough to set any codes, but enough to let it run rich....

If your car is running fine and not throwing any codes, then I would not worry about the color. I've gone through many O2 sensors for other reasons and mine are always have a carbon/sooty color. Should they be? During (CL) closed loop operation it is normal for the O2 sensors to constantly switch between rich/lean conditions. That is how they are intended to operate.
