I am in the process of yanking my no oil pressure having LS1 and building a 408 iron block. In the process of this i have noticed alot of dust and grit past the maf, tb and even into the intake manifold. I was not too fond of the foam filter when i saw it and how well( lack of ) it seals in the box. Has anyone put a paper or K&N filter in place of the foam vararam one. I dont want my brand new motor breathing all this junk. And if anyone wants to argue that not that much is getting into the motor shoot me your email adress and ill send you a pic of my number 1 plug that looks like someone diped in super glue then stuck it in a sand box!
Been said time and time again, how do you think they get more air in.
It filters less. This is why, to me, it is not worth the 5 hp you get for the hundreds you spends and the dirt it lets in
The foam filter is substandard to say the least! And, yes, they are being replaced with aftermarket K&N alternative filters by most of the disappointed consumers who purchase this particular unit. The other qualm is the fact that the unit (Vararam) is far too cumbersome to install, often necessitating modification and extra drilling, on top of the high cost for the unit itself, plus another aftermarket filter! Recently, a supporting vendor has advertized the Vararam with a newer filter ("the green filter"). Therefore, to each his own. Virtually any aftermarket air iflter intake does offer more breathability over stock.
The new Vararams come with a green filter or another type of cotton gauze filter (that's the one I received with my recent order) They haven't come with the foam filter for a while now I believe.
after 2000miles with my vararam and seeing a bunch of **** in my tb I decided to switch to the bpp vortex rammer and couldnt be happier. vararam is a complete pile of **** and looks like a 4th grader made it. I settle for a 3hp loss to gain the comfort of knowing I'm not sucking **** into my engine.

I have done this with my vararam just before I sold it. It isnt a straight drop in. You will need to get some weather stripping and glue it around the k&n filter to get it to seal. Its not hard but its way too much rigging for a $350 intake that already looks rigged from the get go . Did i mention I hate the vararam
