Strange noise from shifter HELP!
Bascially, my 01 Z06 with 47k has a hiss noise coming from my shifter. It can be heard mostly when the car is moving. Faster the car moves the louder. Sounds like air! It will persist with clutch in and out. Even at highway speeds and slow speeds it can be heard. If car is at a stop and idle, basically no noise. Gone! How loud? I have a corsa and still can be heard.
Best way to describe the noise is the sound of new set of brake pads make when on a new rotor and you give it that spin before putting your wheel on or the sound of metal on a lath, but to those who know nothing of these types of noises just assume it to be air. Shifting and clutch pedal performance are fine
My issue I've test drove two other Z06's with no noise. Dealer has change trans fluid and bascally says thats how Z06's are.
I was told by another mech.(vette tech) that I may have bad bearing in the trans and the noise is traveling up the torque tube, after only a test ride.
Last note is that the dealer is calling this condition "6 Speed Rattle Growl Buzz Noise" or "Neutral Pinion Shake Vibration" to which GM says there is no fix for this "It's just normal"
What is the deal?

Do you have the STOCK shifter??
Inside the shifter, there is a black plastic sound isolator on the bottom of the shifter. It snaps on the ball joint. All of this stuff needs to be in place or working properly or you will have noises. The stock shifter handle also has a rubber isolation that seperates the handle from the shifter rod it self.
C5 transmissions do have a rattle noise if you put the shifter in netural, clutch out and shut the engine off. It sounds like a bunch of marbles in a tin can! That would be the 6 Speed Rattle that you mentioned! If you press the clutch to the floor, that noise will NOT happen!
I have a Kirban aftermarrket shifter. It does not have a rubber vibration damper in the shifter handle. I do occasionaly get the BUZZ noise but have learned that you can minipulate the shifter handle and cause the noise to stop.
I added some heavy duty fiberglass insulation in the area just below the leather shifter boot. That made a LARGE reduction in tranny, tunnel noise!
