Default LT Header Install - Realistically how long will it take?

I'll be doing my Dynatech LT header install tomorrow morning and I wanted to get a feel for how long it's going to take. I have the car up in the air right now so I won't have to deal with jacking it up come tomorrow morning. I will be working by myself with hand tools. I have a decent amount of experience working on cars too.

Realistically how long can I expect to take?

I did the same job about 3 months ago on a lift, but I had a helpin hand. It was the biggest thing I had ever done, but it was as painless as everyone says.

It seemed the hardest part of the job was removing all the stock exhaust and the plug, wires, coil packs, dip stick, alternator and drive belt. take your time and rest when you get tired. Header install is quick once the headers are installed into position. Good luck with the install.

Thanks for the info guys.

I'll be getting out there bright and early. I do have a question - there is a threaded hole pretty close to the A.I.R. hookup on one of the primaries; what plugs in there?

My hardest part was removing and starting the last bolt on the drivers side rear. I had my 16 year old daughter out there laying on the engine to get the right angle for her small hand to get in there. My suggestion find someone with small hands before you get totally frustrated.

the threaded hole close the passenger side air tube mount is the dip stick mount.

things I found out

1. a 10 mm reversing ratchet wrench helps a lot on the header bolts.

2. a new pair of oem gasket ar nice to have

3. If they are old lg versions...I did mine without removing the steering shaft and spark plugs. but ya have to be careful

4. unhook battery, as starter needs to be lloosened,,,,watch the proximity of te wires, they can melt easy\\

5. I would install a heat shield on the starter if ya can get one for insurance

5. dont forget the ground strap on the drivers side

search and you will find more hints

4-6 sounds about right...re-aligning the exhaust tips will take someone to tell you when they are right if you have aftermarket exhaust...

I'd lean towards the 6 hours if it's the first time you've done the job and you take your time.

8 hours for three old farts. Lousey plugs were the hardest part. Cracked one and didn't realize it until after we fired her up.

Well, all I gotta say is DAMN. I'll be honest, the install was pretty straightforward but it was the little things that hung me up. I ended up taking 14 hours from start to finish. I can totally relate to WKMCD's comments, I found myself using some pretty colorful language at times.

Removing the driver's side exhaust manifold bolt on the far right was a pita. I was able to route the passenger side header in without removing the valve cover which was a relief. The driver's side was kind of a pain but once I moved the clutch line, ground wire and steering linkage out of the way it went in pretty easily from the bottom.

The most difficult part was getting everything lined up and sorted out. I got the entire system up and then after inspecting the donut gaskets at the powercats I realized that one of them wasn't seated properly. Soooo I took the entire system back down from the collector back. It turns out the gasket wasn't seated because one of the intermediate pipes was in backwards (front to back). There is a slight bend in the pipe that I failed to pay attention to until I had the entire system bolted up.

Once the system was bolted up correctly I had to route all four O2 sensors in such a way that they didn't come in contact or even close to the headers. Fabricating ways to keep these wires out of harms way took at least an hour.

Let me say that the end result was well worth the hours of hard work and frustration. The car sounds wicked! The resonance that was once somewhat overpowering with my B&B Bullets is gone! The car runs a lot smoother and sounds all around healtheir. My butt meter tells me I gained a good amount of power too. It seems like I gained most of my power in the midrange, it doesn't seem like I lost any power on the bottom end or gained too much on the top end. Maybe once I throw an intake on there I'll get a dyno tune.

I just wanted to thank Dynatech for putting together an amazing header package. The directions were clear and well written, the kit included everything from brand new manifold and flange gaskets to new header bolts and even zip ties! The build quality was superb as well - if you're on the fence about which system to buy Dynatech is the way to go.
