The filter you received is a "Green" filter. Green temporarily ran out of green colored mesh and ran a group of our filters with the off color mesh to fill our needs. The "grey" filter is not thick as the Green filter but performs very much the same(comes from an alternate supplier) You will need to trim the ducts with the filter you have to ensure a proper fit. Our next order of filters from Green should have the green mesh but be assured other than the color the quality and performance of the filter you have is the same. Hope this answers the question
The filter makes me regret getting the vararam. If Id do it all again, Id go with the blackwing, or cut and mod my stock systems.
I did both before, the high IAT's still kill you as compared to the vararam. BTW, i just received the gray filter in roughly two weeks from order date.
The filters are washable and reuseable and guaranteed for 200,000 miles. K&N has a filter that is a close fit but requires a gasket kit to seal. The number is 33-2522 and I have seen it priced from The LAPD
at 49.95 plus shipping. We believe that our filters are superior to the K&N and are made to fit.
theres nothing on a vararam that fits! i have a new one still in the box if you want to buy it back!
I bought one last fall when there was a GP. When I finally saw it, I decided not to use it. The filter looked like it was made with chicken wire and packing foam and the quality and fit of the components was a joke. I sold it on eBay for $100.00 less than I paid for it and even then I felt like I was screwing somebody. I bought a Callaway Honker and while more expensive there's no comparison in quality of filters, parts and fit. Clearly an example of "you get what you pay for".

Am real interested in installing a VARARAM in my 02 but am concerned about driving in HEAVY RAIN.
That's not normally a problem in Sunny Southern California but I plan to do some traveling to the mid west and east this summer and don't want any engine damage if driving in heavy rain. I know enough not to stick my nose in deep water but am concerned about how well the Water Trap really works.
the Gray filter ( This is manufactured by a Donaldson subcontractor)
Best Regards VR tech
I just took my Vararam off today and confirmed it is indeed the "grey" filter
I received a very early version of the b-1 and this has sealed AND filtered well!
I have entered many a VR thread and, since it was an early one, it is a ROYAL PIA to open up .So I wasn't positive which one I had....
Now I understand why I have been a Vararam supporter all this time, and also understand other people's issues a bit more clearly
FWIW my grey Vararam filter did a pretty good job of trapping dirt, according to my most recent oil analysis. It let in a little bit more dirt than my previous filter (K&N) however a freshly oiled filter will usually let in more dirt at first, and then as it traps more dirt it becomes more efficient at trapping dirt in the future.
Still no word on the grey filter? It seems to me as the best option. I don't know if it will fit a 1b the same as a 2b.
If you go to the buy filters section of their website it points you to a page with no filters on it...
I will say the foam filter in no good for regular use. I loved it for the power, but recent oil analysis has repeatedly noted that high silicone levels found are likely due to poor air filtration...and Blackstone did NOT know I was running a foam Vararam filter.
