Default Removing Pre Cats??

I'm about to drop my exhaust system to install the Elite Emgineering tunnel reinforcement. I was thinking that while I had it down, I might strip out the stuffings to the pre cats.
What effect does this have on performance???
If it picks up a HP or two, OK. But I don't want to loose one foot pound of low-end torque.
Any one done this?

I had my mechanic gut mine. Don't know the HP diff, but one would think that it helped in the breathing department. There was a thread on this site that stated 4 RWHP gain, but I don't know where the figure came from.

We gutted a friend's cats and dyno'd. Stock motor A4, ALL FOUR CATS GUTTED, gained 6sae rwhp.

I think it deepened my exhaust note a little bit.

Thanks all. I think mine is going in the trash too. All that crap in the pipes can't be helping much.

If you're gonna do it, do it the right way. Have the cats cut out and replaced with smooth pipe. While gutted cats improve flow over stock, straight pipe is much better. Gutted cats (my friend's Vette) gained 6 rwhp, straight pipe (my Vette) gained 15 rwhp over stock cats.

Off road only, of course.

On an engine dyno, GM was able to gain about 3-4 hp from the 01 Z06 to 02 Z06 by removing the pup cats. On a LS1 engine it would probably be the same.

My 98 without pre-cats was noticeably louder than my 01 is with the pre-cats.

This is with Borla Stingers. If nothing else, the drone isn't as bad on the 01.
