Got the car up in the air doing the brake rotors. My question is how in the heck to the rear rotors come off? I have the caliper off, the 2 factory little keepers off, the e-brake is off and it is out of gear. Don't tell me that huge center axle nut needs to come off.
I am putting eradispeeds on so I can't reference a stock rotor. This thing won't budge.
I measured the center of both rotors and they are the same size. This thing should slip right off without the axle nut coming off. The rear tires spin freely so it's no a hung e-brake. Help!
Sometimes the e-brake actually holds the caliper in place. This makes removal a PITA. I don't know the proper procedure for removal however I can tell you if you pull hard enough or tap it from the back with a mallet they should slip off. On the other end of the spectrum if you hit them too hard the e-brake parts go flying which is not good. Hopefully someone with the proper procedure will chime in soon. DON'T REMOVE THE NUT as this will do nothing for you.
Thanks 16Again. I will keep trying. It's difficult to see a seam between the rotor and the hub. It has to separate there though I'm thinkging. I did this on my last C5 a few years ago and don't remember any issues like this.
The center of the rotors are forzen to the hubs. You DO NOT need to remove the axel nuts!!!
Use a small wire brush to clean off all of the rust on the lip of the hub where the center of the rotor rest on the hub.
Use WD-40 or PB Blaster to soak the area. Grasp the outside side back edge of the rotor and use a ball peen hammer to mechanicaly aggatate the rotor by hammering on the areas between the studs. No need to beat the thing to death, just a few good whacks.
Becareful, when it pops loose, it will pop off and drop on the ground.
Service manual says they should pull right off.......no other fasteners, retainers, etc. "If difficult to remove, rotate rotor gently as you pull outward."
"Gently" ain't gonna do it. I went right back out there and hit it around the circumference around the edge at about a 45 degree angle about 8 times with a pretty smart blow, say 50% power. (That's a rubber mallet.)
It popped right off. Thanks for the CF style help!
