I am shopping for a C5 coupe. One that I plan to inspect has an OEM CD changer that was installed by a Chevy dealer. If I buy the car I plan to remove the changer. The owner is unsure about how the installation was done. Old posts indicate that it can be done without cutting or drilling. True?
The factory changer mounts on 4 bolts that come through the rear tub. Two bolts are welded on a small plate, the two plates are glued and pop riveted to the outside of the rear tub and the bolts sticks inside the car. Since the bolts are welded to plates there is no need to access the outside when install/uninstall the changer. I don't know if these plates were install in any cars that didn't have the changer as a factory option. My 2001 Z06 did not have them. The carpet will have to have holes for the bolts to pass through also. I don't know if all carpet had the hole, I bet they did not. My guess is they had to drill and install the bolts in the rear tub and cut the carpet. If you remove the changer you will have 4 bolts sticking out through the carpet. Plus the carpet will be matted down where the changer mounts have been pressed into the carpet.
Yup exactly! I just installed the OEM changer with the factory kit. The plate would be very hard to get off if you can get it off at all. As stated above they are glued to the raw (sanded) fiberglass and pop-rivited into place. I fear if you try to tear the plate out it will tear out the whole back section of the lower trunk. You could try and cut the bolts down but it will be a PITA event.
