Just had a strange occurrence & hope someone my have the gouge on this one... Basically I was driving along at normal highway speeds when I get the "Check Gauges" message on the HUD; I take a look down & see Low Oil Pressure on the DIC window. I checked both the analog & DIC oil pressure readings and all seemed normal. I did a reset to see if it was a simple transient fault or a persistent problem. The message went away & didn't come back. I was close to my destination so I stopped shortly after that message came up. I check the obvious stuff... No leaks, missing components (drain plug, filter, etc... I recently changed oil), normal reading in the dip-stick, everything looked normal to me. On the way home I monitored the oil pressure which ranged from 41psi at 1200-1300revs, 46-53 during acceleration...say 2000-2500revs, give-or-take... Idle showed 37psi. Both analog & DIC seemed to match as well… No DIC messages. Anyhow, an ideas out there??? I'm running Amsoil SAE 5W30, could that be the cause due to its low viscosity (seems thinner than Mobil1 to me)? I hope this isn't a problem and is simply a "hiccup" in the oil monitoring system
My car did it. the oil level message came on twice in a 15 inute span. I checked the level both times immediately and it was fine. I think it just got confused beause I havent had the problem again.
Mark,
I've read about this problem many times on the forum and it is invariably an electrical problem with the sensing unit. FYI, AMSOIL's viscosity and Mobil 1's viscosity are almost identical.
if u are indeed low on oil, that message comes on when there is ~4.5 qts of oil left in the engine. check ur dipstick of course, but if u can afford it, drain your oil and see exactly whats in there...fill up new oil then... this will also tell u if ur burning oil...
it also could be a faulty sensor or even sending unit. they have a habi of going bad...
Aj
Thanks again for the info, I'm pretty sure it's not burning oil as the oil level hasn't changed (reading the dipstick only)... It's an LS6 as well (2003), not sure if they're known for oil burning
I've been driving a lot since the warning briefly appeared, so far it hasn't come up again. I'll certainly be watching it over the next few weeks to see if things change for the worse
