Default LT headers issue on 97-99 ?

I just pulled the trigger on some new LTs But when I was poking around on LS1howto to start absorbing the install procedure they mention an air tube relocation issue. They kind of breeze over it and it seems the header kit they installed came with an adapter or some such.

So what is the difference? And what exactly will I need to relocate the air tube ?

Thanks in advance for your advice

Depending on what year header you bought, you may need to switch out your passenger side AIR tube. That tube is in a slightly different place on 2000 and up cars. Many headers are made for the 2000 and up cars so as to have only one design, thats why you may need the new tube.

I went through the air-tube switch, and it's a pretty big deal.
The metal tube is bolted to the left head behind the engine, and it
routes over to the connector on cylinder#8 in '97-'00 models.
From '01, it routes over to cylinder #6.
So, a different tube, longer and shaped different is used.
This tube must be replaced - it cannot effectively be spliced, unless you can find some tubing or hose that can withstand exhaust temps.
This baby gets really hot. You might splice in some metal tubing, but it would take some creative bending and clamping, am look really bad.
if you didn't seal it well, it would pop, pop, pop with an exhaust leak.

So, order a tube from GMpartsdirect for about $45, wait 2-3 weeks to get it. Then REMOVE the intake manifold and switch the new pipe in.
If anyone says he can swap it without intake removal, hire him as the world's greatest contortionist!

Summary; straightforward but a real hassle.
Try really hard to get a header set with that little pipe sticking out of the #8 pipe, not the #6.

97-99 header airtube location is different then the later years only on the passenger side. Driver side are all the same. Also the dip stick is anchored in a different spot. If you purchased the correct year style header, then the air pipe and dip stick mount point won' be an issue.

I bought LG long tube headers for my 98 and put them on myself. The LG headers came with everything I needed to do the install. The only thing I did differently was to buy a new set of exhaust manifold gaskets from GM. They are metal and the ones that come with the kit are not. The adaptor to move the airtube to cylinder 6 was included. I did have to remove my intake manifold in order to install it. It was a real PITA and in my opinion impossible to install without removing the intake manifold because you're working in a small space between the firewall and the rear of the the driver's side head where you cannot see...only feel. As far as the oil dipstick tube goes, the headers provided for it and I had nothing to modify or change in that area. However, if I was doing it again, I'd probably change out my intake at the same time while I had it off the car. Good luck with your install. Once you get done, it's a great mod and definitely worth the effort.
