Hardened output shaft problem?
Hi all -
Went to put in my left side hardened output shaft today and of course it didn't go flawlessly. Actually, getting the diffy apart and pulling the OEM shaft was easier than I expected. Problem occured when I went to put the side gear onto the new shaft. It does NOT go on easily. It will go on and off with a very light touch of my press. The original shaft will let the side gear move back and forth on the splines with no force at all.
It seems to me that the side gear should be able to move on the splines so that the clutch packs can work properly. Am I thinking properly ?? Do I have a defective shaft?
Or is all OK - just get the gear in position and call it good??
Anybody have similiar experiences?
