I know your supposed to change them on a used engine but would it be ok to use the ones over on a crate engine that has never even been fired?Im just putting heads cam on a new ls6
anyone know for sure?thanks
Never reuse factory LS1 head bolts, they are torque-to-yield bolts, they stretch to the yield point as they are tightened. Meaning once you put them in and torque them up, when you remove them they are longer than they were. They stretch and stay stretched, don't matter if the motor was started or not.
Ford Escorts were the first I seen to use these type bolts. Not sure if they were the first models to commonly use them, or if they were just the first models you commonly had to pull the heads on!

I would have to see that in the Manual before I believed it. But I would believe dealers reusing the bolts and pocketing the money from GM for new bolts. When you read the manual they almost always say to replace bolts no matter what they are for, even the non yield bolts like brake caliper bolts. Probably for liability issues.
Ok so you spent big money on a crate motor for you big money Corvette. Then on top of your big money crate motor you spent big money on a head+cam package. Then you are going to park your big money car in your big money garage (nice floors by the way) and then you are going to try and save a few bucks on bolts. You can most likely get away with it but why. Do your self a favor and buy new bolts or big money ARP studs. Then you will have to worry if you did the right thing or not.
thanks randy, i think the floors are more work than the corvette how much are new bolts by the way?50 bucks? just wondering and what might be the best way to figure pushrod length? do i need a setup checker? thanks,Normand
