I am planning to replace my rear with a DTE Unit with hardened component and am thinking of changing gearing while I was at it. My car is 03 ZO6 with 477RWHP on 100 hp shot of Nitrous(rest of mods in sig). I plan to add headers and maybe a cam later but that will be the extent of my mods for this car. I DO NOT use the nitrous on the street so i'm looking for more fun on the street. I was thinking 3.90 or 4.10 gears. Will 4.10 be too much with my HP at the track with DR's. I will probably move to ET's next year.
i think u might as well go with the 4.10's...u might need the gears for that cam u get later..very streetable..i doubt it will fry ur dr's but the et's will be a smart move

My question for those of you with lots of hp/tq is that doesn't it make it harder to launch the car with bigger gears? And don't you have to combat wheelspin a lot more? I thought that at a certain point, you don't want to get bigger gears for issues with traction...
PARAS,
I think you are right. I don't claim to have much knowledge on this at all and that is why i'm asking. I currently am getting 1.6 60' times on DR's with what I would call mild launches. My track Byron, IL seems to usually be prepped well. If I can run a numerically higher gear and maintain adequate traction, then the gearing can have a great effect on et. I think it is always a balance of HP, Trap speed, Gearing in trans and rear, revlimit, and traction.
I put 4.10s in my vette when it was N/A at 350RWHP and it was awesome
once the S/C went on it was stupid... the 4.10's where terrible for the track.. trying to get traction and the fact that they top out at 120 in 4th makes it where you have to shift into 5th at 1000ft mark..
right now I at 525 RWHP and fixing to add a bit more... and I just installed 3.73 gears... I am still breaking them in.. but I got on it just a little and the car just goes instead of breaking that back tires loose..
I would go 3.73 or 3.90 but I think you have a bit to buch power for 4.10s when you hit the juice....
and just so you know my best 1/4 was 11.6 @121 that is how bad the 4.10s hurt me at the track
with my setup I should be around 10.9 close to 130.. we will see in a couple months
also I got my new gears from DTE... very good quality product

Remember, you have a Z06, different ratios in the gearbox. With your 3.42's you are already "like 3.90's in a non-Z06 car".
With your HP levels, it would be silly to put in 4.10's. If you had a non-Z06, I would say go for 3.90's (still marginal for your power level), but since you do have a Z06 trans, I would say 3.73's max. Then you might say "3.42's to 3.73's isn't enough of a difference to justify the cost", and I would say skip the gears and keep what you have.
i say 3:90s. when running an et street it tends to grow. if you look at most of the cartek guys at your power level they are running 3:90s or 4:10s. when J-rod was running 500rwhp in tommy's car he was also running 4:10s and was trapping 126. the reason i say 3:90s is due to the fact that when on the jug you have to shift a few rpms sooner than NA.
I went from 343 to 390 then back to 373 and am much happier with the 373 ratio. Unless you enjoy burning up tires, 410's are going to be way much gear for your hp.
