Default Sealant on Waterpump?

I took the waterpump off my 98 and the thing was pretty much glued onto the block with the paper gaskets. I got paper and metal gaskets with my gasket kit. Can I use the metal ones or do I need to use the paper ones. Also, what type of sealant do I use with the paper gaskets, just RTV or what?

How was it getting the old gasket off? I have the paper ones also, when I put my water pump back on,I'm just going to spray alittle sealant on them to just hold them in place.

That was a pita to remove the original paper gasket. Make sure you reinstall with the metal gasket. I ordered a set for a 01 from GM. I’m pretty sure that no sealant is required for the metal & ‘O’ ring gasket type. Just to be on the safe side, I added some standard sealant from local auto part store.

No problem putting new paper gasket. I put the metal because I did not want to scrape the paper gasket for 90 minutes next time I have to remove the water pump. The metal gasket came standard starting I think in 99.

The aluminum gaskets have pre-molded silicone beads around each hole and don't require any sealant. Just be sure the sealing surface is clean and smooth after removing the old paper gaskets and everything should be fine.
