Guys I have 20k miles now and have procrastinated with CLB. Do you think for a 99 with 20k on it I am pretty safe or have there been accounts past that point with it locking up? I have not had recall done either.
NOPE !
My '01 Vert with 84K miles at the time ( had the column lock recall done twice at the dealer by the previous owner) locked, in my first week of owner ship.
Fortunately CF helped me get it unlocked and I put the CLB on the next weekend.... now I sleep well.
You're never safe from the column lock problem without the bypass. Mileage has nothing to do with it.
My '99 MN6 locked up at 60K miles.
Just get the bypass and hope for the best.
Likewise. I bought my 99 in late October, 30K miles, and procrastinated and on New Year Eve mine locked up at a restaurant. (Remember it never locks up in your garage) Jiggled with it for about 30 minutes and got it to unlock, drove home and ordered the CLB. Put it on and have had no probems so far.
My '98 never showed any signs of the CLB, then it hit about 4 months ago. The first couple of times it released after pulling the key and trying a few times, then it got stuck pretty bad, had to pull fuses and wait. Ordered the CLB from Corvettes of Houston and I never had to deal with it again.
Depending what year you have, the recall may do nothing. The recall on mine was a reprogram of the PCM to cut off fuel if the column locked. I don't plan on having it done.
I think you have your answer. Shortly after I bought my '99 in August of 2004 I had the column lock issue surface. Even if you had the "recall" done, you certainly want to install the bypass. I've never had any problem with mine since the install.

Thanks for any input
You are not safe, just lucky. My '98 locked at 25,000 miles and my '03 at 17,000 miles. Get the CLB and never let any dealer do the recall.
Can't help you, but without starting a new CLB issue thread, and I don't mean to hijack, but this is related and I searched, BUT:
I know my car had the GM CL recall. Can I also add the CLB? Will anything be adversely affected b/c of the CL recall being done first?
marc, you're doing the right thing
jimmy, I have a CLB in my '02 M6, and had the recall done (only because it was in for other warranty work) with no ill affects. I did have the CLB in before the recall, but that shouldn't make any difference. Your profile says that you have an FRC. As you probably know, the recall does nothing to prevent a "lock up" from occuring again with an M6.
when you say locked up you mean when parkednot driving, correct? i have a 98 6 speed the recall has been done should i start looking at the clb change?
Yes. I have heard mention of "lock ups" while driving, but have never seen one confirmed. Not saying that it hasn't, or can't, happen
Anybody with an M6 should install a CLB. I have read here where folks with a 97 or 98 model years have had problems with the CLB not working. You might want to research that.

Install the CLB
roscoe
Thank You sir!
I'll order and install the CLB ASAP!
I just wanted to make sure that it was okay to put the CLB in after the GM recall "fix"!
Skidmarc, sorry to hijack...I agree do the CLB very soon!
