I know that when I did my Column Lock Bypass my wheel doesn't lock anymore. It is possible that the CLB was done on your car prior to you purchasing it.

That's it. Or it's an automatic and it's had the CL recall done.
My 2001 A4 is the same way -> when the ignition key is removed from the steering column, I can still turn the wheel both directions and it doesn't lock the way other cars do.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I seem to recall asking about this soon after I got the car, and I think I was informed that the reason my steering wheel no longer locks when the ignition key is removed is because the Column Lock bypass was done.

Yep!
Either the stealership or previous owner installed the CLB
Thank you all very much. I was mostly concerned with driving and having it lock up. Sounds like between what you say and the other info on here, this shouldn't happen now.
I have one additional question. The exhaust on the car sounds noticably different from any other vette I have heard. It is beautiful actually. How do I tell what brand has been installed? I haven't noticed any obvious stampings on it. Any suggestions? I would really like to figure this out so I can recomend it to other owners, it is really that nice!
WARNING! Read this! Before you conclude that the previous owner had either a recall done or a bypass installed, check thoroughly either situation before assuming it was done. The reason I am telling you this is because of my experience. When I had my '98, I was the original owner. I had never had any recalls done, nor had I installed a bypass kit. Well, one day I get the dreaded "service column lock" message. I go to get in my car and I can turn the wheel with no problem, even though the message is there. From that day forward, my column never locked again, on its own. Well figuring I might have an additional problem and possibly get locked up, I then went and installed the bypass kit before any further problems could occur. Check this out!

The 01 and newer A4's never had the column lock mechanism built into them - which is good, because they have no issues with the column lock problem. That is just one of the reasons I traded my 00 A4 for and 03 A4.
