We have a 99 vert. Just recently the dash lights have been acting very weird. Sometimes they won't come on at all when the head lights are on. The dealer suggested turning the "Twilight" on and off to see if that would gets the lights working. This does seem to work but we have to do it every time we use the headlights. Now the dealer is saying it might be the "instrument cluster". I don't agree!!!! When the lights come on they stay on without any problems until the car is turned off. Then we have to go through the "Twilight" on routine again.
Has anyone had this problem??? Does anyone know what this might be??? Thank you for your time in reading this!!!
to get the dash lights on.i'm assuming you turn on twilight sentinel and they come on.twilight sentinel by-passes the light switch.if you play with the light switch, can you get them to come on?
dpd, Thank you for your reply. The outside lights work fine with the light switch. Could this still be the switch or the wiring from the switch to the dash lights???
it may be the light switch itself.i doubt it would be a cluster.i will have to look at a schematic, but if everything works fine through twilight, but not with the light switch,i would think light switch, but until i look at a wiring diagram[i know there are 1/2 relays invlolved] i can't swear to it.
dpd is a great guy, very sharp. He has helped my tremendiously w/ my air bag problem. If I ever get to N.J. or he gets to Alabama dinner is for sure on me.

the next time you try the lights BEFORE you go to twilight sentinel, move the dimmer switch[switch that dims the interior lights a couple of times and see if that makes the dash lights come on.
That did not do anything. The only thing that does make them come on is playing with the twilight option!!! I have the car at the dealer now and they are charging me $80 to check it out!!! I hope they find out what is causing this!!! Thank you for your help!!!!
Well, if it's any comfort to you, this seems to be a relatively common problem on 98's - maybe 99's are the same. Two of my friends have needed it on their 98's and I've seen it mentioned several times here on the forum.
So with any luck, your problems will be solved with the multifunction switch. Not cheap, but it's good to find the solution.
