I can't seem to find the whining noise that is coming from my 2001 M-6 car. Sounds like ring and pinion noise. It is only loud when I am at light throttle in any gear. Off the throttle there is no noise. I am pulling my hair out. I had the trans and diff pulled out and checked and they say there is no problem. I think the warranty company does not want to cover it. Anybody have a bearing or gear noise like this? I am taking it to Richard Hibbard Chevy on Monday. He is the Corvette God out here in L.A. as far as dealers go. My Father and he have known each other forever. I hope he can find it. The car has been down six weeks and still no resolution from the idiot trans shop the warranty company made me go to
HOLY SHIZZLE YES. I have been beating my head against the wall. I changed it about a week before the noise started happening. I put Redline synthetic 75/90 double throwdown gear oil in it and synthetic redline ATF in the trans at the same time. I thought this had something to do with it so i put back in GM fluids and the noise is still there

Did you put the friction modifier also in the differential.
Ill tell you my story, I just had my Differential removed and sealed about 3 weeks ago, the fluid was also replaced with redline gear lube synthetic and redeline friction modifier, they did a great job, steam cleaned the whole rear carriage and all looks like new, 98 coupe, but I notice that the rearend would whine during hard turns (like into the driveway etc), so I took it back to them, they added a little more friction modifier(which is normal sometimes), and I drove it another week and a half and noticed the noise still, took it back, and he reflushed and refilled with redline again but this time he added the GM friction modifier, I drove it home, stopped off at a local parking lot and did figure 8's for about 15 minutes , and bam the noise is gone, You need to break in the gears by doing turns so the friction modifier will adhere to the gears again.

Hope this helps
My car does it all of the time, it gets louder as you go faster at light throttle, and disappears at no throttle, it does not change around corners and you can't here it at low speeds. I am sure you're noise was the clutches in the posi traction unit. I had hoped that the GM fluid would get rid of it, I put 2 bottles of the GM friction modifier in it just to see what happened and it still howls like crazy. I really appreciate the input, I just think that my problem is worse than fluids.
Ya Sorry just read the latest post from you, ya if its doing it all the time that sounds like something else, what part of Cali are you located in, If your close to the LA area or vacinity, take it to A&A Performance, Im sure they can figure it out for ya, but then again, I dont know what part of Cali you reside in.
I just picked up a 2001 C5 with a 6 speed and have noticed the same noise. Mainly between 65 -75 mph. The noise disappears when you let off the gas pedal. I also noticed that the noise does not start until I drive on the highway for a while, heat / viscosity related I guess. Warranty shop also says its "normal for these cars". I guess I'll try changing the trans & rear lube with factory recommended lube as a start.
This being my first post, I will not tell you that I know what I am talkin about here. However, I have owned a torch red / black 2002 convertible w/ manual gears for more than 3 years now, and my dealership maintenance guy and I have seen eachother way more than I care to remember (he always did the right thing though). One of the issues was a whining noise seemingy coming from the transmision, very audible around 3000 RPM in first and second gears: I'll try to make it short, but after having taken apart and put back together about everything in the transmission -gearbox included-, they figured out that the noise came from a bearing supporting the torque tube (they attached a bunch of mikes all around the car and drove it for like a week to pinpoint the noise). GM did not want to replace the whole thing, and they asked the dealership to replace said bearing instead. This seemed to be a big deal for the dealership, but they finally managed it and the noise went away.
I know how irritating this noise can be, so I hope you'll fix it.
