I recently installed the vararam B2 with a K&N Filter. They guys that did the install installed it directly into the fascia. No screens. I figured what the heck more air ( also because I bought it used so I didn't get the screens ) I don't think it affected the functionality though. Also the K&N filter was installed after cleaning it only without oil. I didn't want any of that oil/maf ****. Also I plan on cleaning it every 10,000 kms i.e. 6200 miles. So I figured I should be safe.
Problem is this, since the install I could hear the vararam whistling. I heard about the whistling before from some air intakes so I figured the vararam is the same. Only issue is the whisling seems to be getting louder. I mean LOUD as in like a supercharger whine. Is this normal ? Or does it have to do with the way the vararam was installed air rushing through ? Filter getting dirty causing the same ( air passing through the remianing bits )?
there's a seal kit for the k&n filter to seal the housing.that's probably your whistle.running the filter unoiled will do more harm than good.you will end up sucking dirt in.FWIW,you should've went with something else as the vararam is more trouble then it's worth.JMO
the vararam is a good system. You must oil the K& N, it will not filter properly without it. Yes the system will whistle some, but it sounds like you might want to check for leaks around the inlet tubes and filter. One easy way to check for leaks is to block one inlet tube with a rag and then blow compressed air into the other tube. Check for leaks at all connections.
I've had mine in for about 6 months now. No problems. I hear whistling at first from the A.I.R. pump but when it shuts down no more whistling.
I have no whistling, except for the A.I.R. pump and that only runs for a couple of minutes after start up. If you are hearing a whistle other than that, I would suspect the install. I did mine, and have not put screens on it yet. The correct install is to mount onto the front bumper / fascia opening where the fog lights are. Really, there is no choice by the installer, it only fits in one way. Its a great air system.
Ok I cleaned the filter, oiled it. Rechecked everything. Thing is it was never the vararam . I must have been drunk when I made the initial diagnosis coz today it was more clear. The whistling is in fact whinning from the rears . Help please.
For reference :
I had changed to 3.42s OEM ZO6 with HD output shaft built by ECS.
Break in was done for 800-900 miles.
Guys that did the change put in Mobil 1 Gear Additive.
Tranny Oil was Mobil 1 too.
It never whinned before. Even after the break in over a month ago.
After the break in I gave the shop the car to install the N2O but it was left untouched ( as per them ) till this past Monday when I picked it up... Then the whinning started.
I would contact ECS and get their thoughts. But sounds like you might need to change the fluid and be sure to get enough additive in there. The additive is supposed to reduce the whining. The N20 install should not affect the gears, unles the shop went hot-rodding the car without your permission.
I just got word from the dealership. They advised there were no proper tolerences in the gear and improper adjustement in the ring and pinion which lead to the eating ot the rings problem.
I pmed ECS already.
