Default Changing tranny fluid. Ran into problems. HELP!

On my manual tranny I removed the drain plug, and nothing is pouring out...I stuck my finger in the hole and I don't even feel fluid.

What the hell is going on!?!? What should I do?!?

Also, the tranny is covered in grease and grime. The rest of the undercarriage doesn't look that way. It almost looks as if it is leaking. Any ideas???

Default tranny grease

I would drain the tranny and look to see if there are any signs of metal in the fluid. If not, and you have a substantial amount of fluid come out I would just refill it, clean everything up and keep on the lookout for the location of the leak.

its leaking there is a difference between leaking and seaping. are there drops on the floor of the garage? drain, refill, check again later

Add fluid as your finger only reachs in so deep. Then clean around the tranny with a pressure washer and keep a eye on it for leakage,

Probably a stupid question, but you did pull the "drain" plug and not the "filler" plug, right?

If you pulled the drain plug and no oil came out, something's very wrong. I'd clean the unit off completely with some kind of spray cleaner, then fill it with fluid and drive it for 5-10 miles to get everything good and warm, then get back under the car and see if you can figure out where the leak is so you'll know what kind of repair need be done.

The fluid level should be just shy of the fill hole when running and is full. We used an "injection" type filler to get the overflow to come out and then capped it off--messy but effective.

I find it hard to beleive that you could drive for any time at all with no lube in the trans, and it would not self-destruct. If it was truely empty, that 3.7 quarts had to go somewhere, should have made one hell of a mess. Drain on my 2002 M6 is a square 3/8th drive plug, lower rear passenger side. Fill plug is on driver side about half way up, also a square 3/8th drive. Hope that thing is not empty! Good luck.

Now that I think about it maybe I did pull the wrong plug. I will investigate.

Oddly enough I havent noticed a leak. No dripping and no spots in the driveway...

Alright... I located the "drain" plug. I was dumb for not looking hard enough. I wish I would have been more prepared for it to go all over the place. I nearly drowned. lol

Still no idea why the tranny is covered in junk.....

Alright. I replaced the trans fluid. Drained and refilled. That job is a pain in the *** with only using jackstands. Next time I might have someone do it.

I had my local mechanic do mine with my help. I just pushed on the plunger. I am glad I didn't do it all by myself. If I had a lift, it would be a different story.

Car should be level to get proper fluid amount. I put mine up on two sets of Rhino Ramps.

The oil additive is only used in the differential NOT the transmission. It is for the positraction clutches.

Thanks for all the tips guys.

Yes, I was changing the tranns fluid. The car was completely level during this operation. My problem from the beginning was from pulling the "fill" plug as someone mentioned. I found the drain plug after some searching. I guess I got disoriented underneath there...
