I just installed a Kerbin short shift very happy with it was told hurst and B&M had problem with rattle is that true
Lots of opinions on the Forum on this subject over the years that I have been checking in. I have the Hurst and am very happy with it. I have no rattles. The Hurst comes with stops that many folks recommend you take out altogether. That is what I did and I have no problems. B&M makes a very nice shifter as well.
All I know about the Kerbin is that it comes with a bunch of shims for modifying the angle of the shift lever. Looks like a nice shifter but the majority of the folks I see on this Forum have either the Hurst or the B&M.
I have a Hurst shifter. I have shortened it a little over one inch. No rattles. I love it and would never consider reinstalling my OEM shifter or the new C6 shifter.
I also have the Kirban and really like it!! I set the stops so that the shift lever "JUST" touches it when the trans is fully in gear. That way I get that POSITIVE "Its in gear feel" everytime I shift!!!
The Kirban shifter handle is detachable (two grade 8 bolts) and you will find that you can drill two additional holes in the handle and make the length of the handle a LOT shorter. I left mine long cause the wife liked it that way, Now that she has her own C6 , I will shorten the handle.
Here are some pictures of a Kirban compared to stock and some install photos.
I have an extra stock shifter and would like to try shortening it. Any tips on how to do it and how much to shorten it....
Thanks for any info
Bob
if you look at the stock shifter, the shaft is actually two pieces.
you need to seperate the two pieces using a dremel to cut a slit in the lower portion of the "top" piece (the part with the threads for the handle is the top piece), after you get them seperated, the bottom part of the shaft will have a metal sleeve with a rubber insulator inside it, keep this part (it acts like a counter weight), and thread the top portion of the lower shaft with a die, next take the "top" portion that you removed and cut the section off where it starts to taper out (you are cutting off the part that the slit was cut into), you will now be left with the section that has the threads for the handle (and a portion of that is unthreaded), that piece is hollow, now using a tap, you will cut threads into it so that it will thread onto the lower piece of the shifter that you threaded eariler, all you will need now id a jam nut to lock the two pieces together!
also you will be able to adjust the length of the shifter to make it shorter or longer.
