Have a couple of questions about dropping the engine out of a C5 Corvette:
1. Is it necessary to drop the transverse leaf spring? The technical service manual says you should when dropping the engine out of the bottom of the car.
2. A/C compressor… Is it possible to remove the engine without removing the A/C compressor? There are rigid lines from the firewall to the back of the pump. Not sure if I can maneuver the engine to clear the pump. I am not afraid of dumping the system charge but am concerned with getting trash in the lines.
I've been following the service manuals and am about 70% complete on dropping the engine. Any other tips/tricks are most appreciated. Thanks.
The ones I've pulled I pulled from the top. Seemed to be easier on the Vetts that way. I just unbolt the headers and such, remove the bolts from the torque tube, move the steering rack, all the ground wires. I then drop the passenger side of the front cradle so the oil pan will clear. Remove the Ac compresior from the block and then just pull it forward and up and out.
If you are coming out of the top you do not need to disconnect the a/c compressor. Just unbolt it and push it to the side. If you are coming out of the bottom I suspect it would work the same way. I pulled out the top so I know it works this way.
If you are coming out from the top, lemme know and I will comment more but it sounds like you are going out the bottom so I really can't comment since I have not done it that way before.
In Corvette Magazine,#17, May '05 (ZR1 cover article), on page 101, there is an article on re- ringing the '99-'02 engines. Has some details, writing, and pics about removing the engine (from the bottom).
It does mention removing the transverse spring because the engine, crossmember come down as a unit. It also mentions the refrigerant recovered (obviously), but not removal of the a/c comp itself.
I never taken a C5 LSx engine out, but I remembered this article in my Corvette "library"!
