Yes I agree with you. I don't care if I have to put a qut in it every 1500 miles as long as it doesn't smoke. I might have saw it smoke a little when my freind was driving it and I was fallowing in his blower 69 wich is for sale he wants like 50000 for it he would take 40000. I don't have a clue what it is worth. The under part of car has as good of paint job as my vett body. I wonder if these others with more savere oil burning notice smoke coming out when they punch it? 1 qut every 1500 miles I can live with running it harder. How can you abuse a vett engine anyway arn't they made to run at 5000 rpms 24-7?
I just saw the October issue of Corvette Fever. They have a Q&A question for C5 owners called C5 Solutions and someone posed the oil consumption question cause he was concerned about his pending '02 purchase.
Although, the editor said he didn't know specifics, he did venture out enuff to say that there has been acknowledgment of an oil consumption issue and that rings were being replaced on effected engines and his theory on it was:
- ring tension or
- rings with the finish of the cylinder wall
I have felt that ring tension with the 9lb ring pack could have been the issue and why it has not been a common issue maybe due to quality variances.
At least one writer had the ***** to venture out and make an educated guess rather than to hide behind the corporate skirt and blame driver's driving habits. High rpm, low load driving... Phooey!
I believe ALL 2001 C5s and F-bodies use oil. If driven aggressively, they will burn oil. I have a friend who is a used car dealer and goes to the auctions all over Mass, and Conn. He has seen 2001 C5s going through as GM buy backs. (They have to disclose that) All were 6 speeds, including 2 Z06s. So it looks like there is a problem. So when you go to the pump for fuel, tell the attendant, full service of course, that you want to filler up with oil, and check the gas. :(
I've noticed that some of the guys over at LS1.com have switched from Mobil 1 to Valvoline synthetic oil and swear that they have noted an immediate improvement in oil consumption.
I don't recall reading on this forum where anyone has had similar results. Anyone here made the switch and noted any improvement?
MDT, I just changed my Mobile 1 5W-30 after adding 1.5 qts in 2946 miles. I'm sending off a sample of this used oil to Black Labs to see what they say about it. This oil change I put in Valvoline Synpower 5W-30 and I will monitor oil consumption and I when I change this oil I will also send it to black labs, with 2946 miles as well to do a direct comparison. I will drive the car the same as I did the previous 3K so there can be a pretty accurate comparison. I'll post my results when I get them .
The clock on my 2001 6-Speed just rolled over 10,000 and it seems to have
stopped using oil, or is not using as much. May the rings are starting to settle
in. At one time I was using 1 quart every 500 to 700 miles. It is doing better
now and I really do not want a ring job. If it settles down to 1 quart ever 2,000
I will be happy
Thanks for all the input. Unfortantely, no clear cut sure-fire solution here. Seems only a percentage of 6 spd C5's burn oil badly. I have begun the official claim process through GM, at the dealers suggestion. The dealer is simply unable to get replacement rings, and admits this may not be the proper solution. I have seen an internal GM memo that claims a ring replacement should allow those vehicles now burning a quart every 300-700 miles to go 1800-2200 miles before needing a quart. GM told me that replacing rings is what GM would like to do in order to solve the problem. I told GM that this wasn't acceptable. They asked what I felt should be done, and I told them a new engine would be the answer, or else they should begin buy-back paperwork. I am supposed to have a decision this week from GM. I see where some owners have had success by simply hitting mileage marks, like 10-15K. I'd be happiest with that to tell you the truth, however I don't put more than 5K on a year. Maybe I can get GM to extend my warranty period to cover the costs involved in the event that mileage doesn't fix the problem....then just put on miles and see what happens!
