Default coolant question

If a car is never going to see cold weather is there any advantage to running anti-freeze instead of just using distilled water?

The mix will raise the boiling point.

If you talking about running PURE anti freeze - then NO. Do not do it. The anti freeze is designed to work with H20 - in fact I hear that it will not work without H20 (or not as effective). And anti freeze is also anti boil. Dont do it. Mix 50/50 with distilled water.

Do you mean just water? If so no don't do it. The antifreeze has corrosion inhibitors.

Never ever run just pure water. That will ruin the colling system. The system is designed for a 50/50 mix. That is best for cooling and for not freezing.

I just followed the label on the container and went with that!

Lots of race cars or drag cars run only water sometimes with a bottle of water wetter..

Better heat dissapation.. No need for coolant if not running in cold weather or if not using air conditioning..

Using water only in cooling mode can freeze the core..

If you car will not see cold weather, even if you will use the A/C, best bet is going with a 70% distilled water/30% dexcool mix..

I wouldn't eliminate the coolant totally, but 1/3 coolant will work..

Capacity is 12.8 quarts....Almost 3 gallons....
Use 1 gallon dexcool, the rest distilled water..

This may be hearsay, but I was told the reason GM switched to deathcool was because of the increasing use of aluminum in the coolant system. As the increase in dissimilar metals surface area increased, galvanic corrosion became more and more of a problem.

If this is true, using just water will set up a nice galvanic cell, and destroy your cooling system in short order. Not having enough protection by over dilution will just slow down the process. I don’t have time to check the validity of the above, but it concerns me enough that I wouldn't mess with it.

Always ran 50/50 Dexcool, even the previous owner. Recently did H/C so had a really good chance to inspect all the coolant passages. Everything looked brand new. I'm sold on Dexcool. Why change what works?
