I'm about 99 % certain it's the Power Steering Pump making a screaching noise at 3000 rpm when the wheel is turned a little. I undoubtedly got air trapped in the rack when I mistakenly disconnected the two metal lines in the middle of the rack during a crank pulley swap. I did fill the rack up pretty good by sticking a 4" length of 3/8" hose onto the fittings and providing a source of fluid by having a small funnel on top. By turning the rack input shaft by hand, I could watch the fluid level in the funnel go down. When one side took all the PS fluid it could, I re-attached the line, but suspect there was air in these lines. I also "primed" the two ports on top of the pinion box, however, connecting the other lines from the pump and resevoir could have added some air into the system. The occurrance of the screeching has diminished significantly in driving 20 miles, and I'm wondering if anyone else has had such an experience. I've turned the wheel lock to lock about 30 total times trying to purge any trapped air,but the pump still screeches. The fluid level in the resevoir has not gone down at all. I don't know how air in the lower part of the system could cause the pump to screech, but if the noise means the pump is hurting itself and fails, couldn't I end up with the same problem if a new pump is installed?

 

You are suppose to turn the wheel lock to lock(back & forth) about 20 times,keeping an eye on fluid level,then start the car and do the same thing.Oops I see you did that,sorry.What brand fluid did you use?

 

Valvoline Synthetic P.S. Fluid. I know how to bleed brakes, but I don't know how the hydraulic power steering system is set up.
