Default New Gears Commin' now what?

Hey All,

So i have a set of 3.73's coming for my 01' coupe w/A4. Can't wait.

So, I know that i need to have the car tuned with new gears but, is there anything else that i should do while gears are getting swapped out?

I know i want to get a torque converter. Not sure which one. I am going to do some auto crossing and draging but, this is my daily driver as well. So nothing too extreme. Suggestion would be appreciated.

Sui

A Yank SS3600 will keep things nice and tight, plus make a big SOTP difference.

Default gears

I just went with 3:42s and a yank 3500. Difference in drivebility was not noticable after a few miles. A&A installed my 3500 yank and I drove it from Oxnard, Ca. to Flagstaff, Az. For most of 134, all of the 210, and about 15 miles up 15 traffic was bumper to bumper, over two solid hour. I went 103 miles in 3 hours. The torque convertor did not make a noticeble difference in drivebility and did not cause the tranny to run hot.

I thought the a stall that high would affect daily driving. I live in L.A. and alot of that time is spent in traffic.

That saie is 3500 + too much?

Thank for the responses

My opinion for a daily driver I would stick with a 2600-2800 stall

It depends on the converter. The Yank SS series feel very tight for the stall speed they're rated/listed as. A Yank SY series would be kind of loose, but is friendlier to street tires(hits softer), and a Vig 3600 really stalls around 4000 rpms. So if you're concerned about the converter being too loose, I wouldn't go smaller than a Yank SS3200. I ran the SS4000 and found it tollerable driving home from e-town in bumper to bumper traffic, and a SS3200 would feel just like stock teamed with 3.73's, so the choice is obvious. Not everyone, but a lot of people who go with something under 3000 usually regret not going larger.

In an A4? I'd never go with anything more then 3.42's in an auto.

Now a 6spd car is different.

When my car was my daily driver I ran 3.73 gears with the Yank SS 3600 T/C and it was perfect even in bumper to bumper traffic. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Don't forget to install a trans cooler when you put in a T/C.

I average 22 mpg and that is split between stop and go and highway. 18 miles each way (36 miles per day) 50/50 split. I lost aprroximately 1 mpg going from the 3.42 to th 3.73

Why? It sounds like there are many problem free A4 with this gear or more. Or would be more cautious about putting in a too hight T/C than the rear gear.

Please explain.

You'd be surprised how streetable 3.73's and 3.90's are. I have 4.10's installed! The car accelerates without effort at any speed. They definitely aren't for everyone, but are much more streetable than I expected. With 400rwhp through a A4, 4400 stall, and 4.10's, I still see over 20mpg on the parkway. But that also has to do with the tuning.

Biggest downfall with shorter gears would be gas mileage. I take my C5 on long trips to philly and DC and i LOVE the gas mileage i get with 2.73's and a stall.

Last time i went to DC i averaged 28mpg.

Right on! Thats good to hear. I do not have 400 rwhp (yet ) but i wanted better acceleration at street and freeway speeds. I'm not too worried about gas mileage since i put as one of my hobbies is burning dinosaurs!

Someone mentions that i should think about getting a Transgo kit installed around the same time. Does this make sense?

Thanks again you guys rock!!
