I just started my 98 C5 for the first time in probably about 6 weeks or so. Had a little trouble starting up due to battery charge, but ran fine once it was going. My problem is, I wanted to take it for a spin just to run everything again, and I can't get the car moving. Just as the clutch is about to disengage in either first or second the car stalls every time. I can move the car a few feet before it stalls, even with riding the clutch.
My question is, can a clutch or some part of the assembly go bad from teh car sitting too long? I've had the car a year and a half and never had a problem with anything mechanically. Never had a clutch issue. I even tried to run the car for a while and then move it, still no dice.
Not enough info to know, but sounds like it could be the dreaded column lock problem. Computer thinks the column is locked, so it shuts off the fuel when the car moves.
I wouldn't think that is the issue. I had the column lock done at the dealer last year. There are two strange things happening - one is the car stalls right when the clutch catches - the other is if I'm backing the car out (my driveway is on a slight incline - and pressing the clutch in, the car also stalls. Strange thing is that the motor is running smooth and fine sitting still.

Any comments/suggestions are appreciated.
It doesn't sound like its a problem with the clutch. Most likely it's the column lock issue. BE aware that in the past GM just reprogrammed the computer in an effort to solve the problem, it has gotten to the point where they just pull the whole wheel locking mechanism out of the car. This recall has just started recently so I'm sure you haven't got it done yet. I just took my car in today and got it back after a couple of hours. I would give your local chevy dealer a call and have them remove the mechanism and reset your computer, it will most likely solve your problem.
Thanks for the advice. I'm going to call them today and see what they can do. Question - this work should still be considered under the recall umbrella, even if I had the reprogram done, which is all I had done, correct? So Mr. Goodwrench isn't going to charge me an arm and a leg on this?
So with this column lock issue, no error codes are generated from the computer? Because I'm not getting any messages whatsoever, which is why I was so confused. Also, does it still pay to have the column lock bypass installed if I do have them remove the mechanism? As far as I know, I do not currently have it in the car.
