Are there any good recommended proceedures for breaking in new Vettes? I will be picking up my new Vette at the NCM and driving approximately 500 miles home. I have been told to do 100 mile "heat cyles" where you drive 100 miles (non aggressive driving) Let it cool down, drive 100 miles, etc. Do this for 500 miles. Unfortunately I don't have 5 days to get home. I will be driving all in one day. Any ideas? :chevy
Stop for gas, lunch, and dinner! Seriously, you are on the right track. Vary your speeds and keep it below 55-60. Take some "back roads" and it will be easy.
You should really try and give yourself more time to get home. Here's my usual post on breaking-in the C5:
Start out by taking it easy. Light on the gas and bring the RPMs up to about 2500 to 3000 RPM. Progressively increase the gas and bump up the RPMs a little (50 to 100). Make your way up to the point where you will be flooring it to the redline at the 500 mile mark. Then drive it hard from there.
Try to keep the speeds below 55 MPH for most of the first 500 miles to properly break in the rest of the driveline. So, try and stay off of the highways as much as possible. A number of heating and cooling cyles would be good. You want the driveline to be heated up and then allowed to cool to help the gears to mate properly.
While cruising on the highway, since you won't be accelerating, keep changing gears every few minutes or so if you are getting the 6 speed. I'd switch between 3rd, 4th, and 5th initially. Go to 6th occassionally if you are going over 65 MPH.
Take it very easy on the brakes for the first 500 miles.
