Can someone tell me how to realign my steering column with the front wheels to eliminate my "excessive time to centering" code my car gives me? I've had the engine out and obviously the steering wheel got turned so that the sensor is reading wrong. I know it's more than just rotating it one turn and reassembling it. Doesn't the steering position sensor need to read a certain measurment?
There are two codes, one for AH cars and one for those without, they are C1283 and1286 if memory serves me correct. Two ways to get the wheel in proper position, one is with Tech 2 and the other is with VOM. With Tech 2, hook up, turn ignition to on, scroll thru to Steering Wheel Position function and read volts. Should be 2.4 volts when wheels are pointing straight ahead. With VOM, turn ignition on, at the firewall on the steering wheel is the SWP connection, disconnect it and measure the voltage of the middle blue wire...again should be 2.4 volts. If the voltage is different, with the front end in the air, turn wheel until the correct voltage is read and mark with tape, repostions the wheels straight ahead. Disconnect the steering wheel coupler, center the wheels, reconnect steering wheel couple, and rotate tie rod ends equally to center wheels if necessary
